Even China does not get Britain’s waste: it comes to Turkey illegally

The non-governmental organization Greenpeace has revealed that the majority of UK’s plastic waste is delivered to Turkey. While it was stated that the British government sent the wastes to Turkey for “recycling”, it was determined that the route was changed to Turkey as a result of China’s ban on buying these wastes.

Even China does not get Britain’s waste: it comes to Turkey illegally
The research of the international non-governmental organization Greenpeace was on the agenda in the UK … Greenpeace revealed that the British government sent plastic waste to Turkey for “recycling”.

“IT GOES TO COUNTRIES WITHOUT INFRASTRUCTURE”

Greenpeace, who found that these wastes that need to be recycled were buried, incinerated or thrown into the seas, said, “The wastes that the British government announced to be recycled by sending them to other countries are generally sent to countries that do not have the infrastructure to do this. Britain exported 1.8 million kilograms of waste per day to the environment ”.

In the report prepared by Greenpeace, it was determined that Turkey is the country that receives the most plastic waste from the UK.

The British press pointed out that China was the most concerned country for these wastes for a while, “In 2017, China banned plastic waste. Turkey became the main buyer of British plastic waste. Greenpeace’s researchers in Turkey revealed that these plastics were collected, burned and thrown into the sea or rivers instead of being recycled ”.

In the report published by Greenpeace in March and shared its details today, it was stated that the products and wastes of brands such as Tesco, Asda, Co-op, Aldi, Lidl and Marks & Spencer were sent to Turkey and burned here.

Speaking to the British Daily Mail, Greenpeace UK’s Nina Schrank said, “It is disturbing that the plastics and packaging of products sold in supermarkets in our country are burned 3,000 kilometers away, on the roadside in Turkey. We should not send our plastic waste to other countries. The problem is overproduction. The UK has the highest rate of plastic waste per capita after the USA, ”he said.

Greenpeace officials searched for packages and waste from the UK among the rubbish.

The British press reported that almost half of the plastic waste in the country reached Turkey, and wrote that Turkey did not have sufficient infrastructure for recycling.
