Gerzeliler Won, Thermal Power Plant Will Not Be Built

March 2015

The resistance, which started against the thermal power plant that Anadolu Group wanted to establish six years ago in the village of Yaykıl in the Gerze district of Sinop, officially ended when the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization stopped the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process of the project.

The General Directorate of EIA Permit and Inspection under the Ministry ended the EIA process of the project, which was rejected and returned twice on the grounds that it was planned to be built on the forest area, on 23 February.

The Green Gerze Environment Platform (YEGEP), which was established when the project came out, thanked those who supported the Gerze and Yaykıl struggle in its statement.

“As YEGEP members, we have pioneered in a principled way to hear, spread and know the struggle of Yyakıl villagers in Gerze district throughout the country. We are ready to share the pride and happiness of knowing that this struggle has taken place in the historical process from now on.
What happened?

The people of Gerze and Yaykıl struggled against the cumulative thermal power plant project that Anadolu Group wanted to establish from day one.

Police intervened with tear gas to the EIA meeting held on 3 May 2010.

On March 30, 2011, the people set up a resistance tent against the arrival of construction equipment in the village.
