A worrying report from Meteorology: The threat of drought is growing

According to the April drought and temperature reports of Meteorology, “severe”, “very severe” and “extraordinary” drought was observed in Eastern Anatolia, Southeast and southern parts of the Aegean in Turkey. While the average temperature of April in Eastern Anatolia was 8.7 degrees for many years, this year it rose to 12 degrees with an increase of 3.3 degrees.

In the drought report prepared by the General Directorate of Meteorology according to the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) and Percentage of Normal Method (PNI), in April, especially the inner parts of Eastern Anatolia, Southeastern Anatolia and most of the southwestern Aegean and Çorum and Amasya Severe, very severe and extraordinary drought was observed in some parts of Turkey.

While very, medium, light and normal humidity levels were measured in the North Aegean and Marmara, excessive humidity occurred on the coasts of Zonguldak and Bartın.

According to the report of DHA, Meteorology’s report of the Comparison of Average Temperatures of April in 2021, According to 1981-2010 Normals, stated that average temperatures were experienced below seasonal norms in Ipsala and Samandağ.

It was recorded that the temperatures were above the seasonal norms in Eastern Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia regions, Kuşadası, Bodrum, Milas.

APRIL AVERAGE 13.4 DEGREES

In other parts of the country, temperatures were around seasonal normals. While the average temperature of April was 12.1 degrees for many years and last year, the average temperature in April 2021 was 13.4 degrees, according to the report, a 1.3 degree increase was observed this year.

In April, the lowest temperature was minus 6.4 degrees in Van Özalp and the highest temperature was 36.9 degrees in Urfa Ceylanpınar.

MARMARA IS NORMAL SEASONAL

Average temperature in Marmara was below seasonal norms around İpsala and around seasonal norms in other parts. While the average for many years in April was 12.2 degrees, this year it dropped to 11.8 degrees.

The lowest temperature was in Çorlu and Balıkesir with minus 2.1 degrees, and the highest was in Balıkesir with 30.8 degrees.
