Worrying report: Turkey breaks record in decline in 10 years

Sweden-based intergovernmental institution International Institute for Democracy and Election Support compared the democratization and authoritarianism levels of countries while conducting a comprehensive analysis. The report also included statements about Turkey.

Worrying report: Turkey breaks record in decline in 10 years

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), the Official Observer of the United Nations, founded in 1995 by Australia, Barbados, Belgium, Chile, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, India, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain and Sweden. He prepared a comprehensive report and stated that many countries have started to shift towards authoritarianism and an oppressive regime in the recent period.

IDEA, which analyzes different data and compares the performances of countries by conducting research, stated that many countries have started to slide towards authoritarianism, while many countries with established and institutionalized democracies are at risk. Stating that such regimes silence the opponents and pursue populist policies due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the Stockholm-based organization said, “In the light of the data obtained since 1975, more countries are experiencing democratic erosion than ever before. “The number of countries experiencing democratic decline has never been higher.”

It is stated that Afghanistan, which was seized by the Taliban, is one of the most striking examples this year, while the military coup in Myanmar on February 1, the two military coups in Mali since 2020 and the President’s decision to take over the office in Tunisia. There were also prominent examples.
