Very harsh statement from the Guardian: Europe has lost its moral compass

One of Britain’s respected newspapers, The Guardian, published a very harsh editorial about Europe closing its doors to refugees.

The Guardian, one of the well-established newspapers in England, responded harshly to the rise of right-wing in Europe and the strict measures taken against the influx of refugees to the borders. The newspaper used the headline “Fortress Europe: A continent is losing its moral compass”.

In the editorial published in The Guardian, it was stated that the recently implemented anti-refugee and anti-immigrant policies in Europe are contrary to the 1951 refugee convention. In the article, “The rights of refugees were ensured in the agreement signed before the United Nations and the way for countries to protect them was opened. Europe seems to be stripping away the fundamental principles of this convention. So far, nearly 1,000 refugees have died crossing the Mediterranean. This number is about 4 times more than the same period of 2020.

“Europe doesn’t seem to care,” the article said. These are all irregular migrants. Therefore, all of them are kept away with a strategy of cruelty” while the policies implemented by Greece against immigrants from Turkey were also scrutinized.
