They poured concrete and closed the streams of the megacity

The streams opened for construction in Istanbul, which has been concreted with rent policies, pose serious risks. In 2009, in the Ayamama flood disaster, in which 31 people died, we saw that the structures built on the stream beds bring nothing but money to the contractors and disaster to the citizens.

The concrete love of the government is dragging the cities to disaster. Although the government, which causes irreversible damage to nature for the sake of profit, dismisses every flood as a “natural disaster”, irregular and unplanned urbanization is revealed in every rain. The fact that the planned housing needs are not met increases the pressure on the stream beds. In every flood disaster, eyes are turned to the stream beds where interventions are made. Because when these beds are narrowed and opened for construction, the rains turn into disasters and result in loss of life.

Lessons not learned from the experiences, on the other hand, make the following questions repeated: Why is no action taken? Why are the river beds open to construction? Why are infrastructure works not done?

In fact, the answer is clear: The priority of the government is not the citizens’ demand for a livable and safe city, but to fill the pockets of its supporters with urban transformation tenders.

In Istanbul, where 18 million people live, the structures rising over the stream beds are preparing the ground for a possible disaster. The flood disaster that took place between 8-12 September 2009 in the megacity, which opened to rent and where rent towers rise from all green areas, was recorded as one of the flood disasters with the highest loss of life. As a result of the overflow of the Ayamama Creek on the European side of Istanbul, 31 people lost their lives, 3 thousand 816 houses and 1 thousand 490 workplaces were damaged. The floods, which caused a financial loss of 150 million Euros, suffered the most from the constructions such as factories, highways and bridges near the stream beds, as well as the settlements established near the stream bed.
