ANKARA academics expert in the field in earthquake in Turkey, the problems in the Parliamentary Investigation Commission Measures can be taken against earthquakes and spoke alternatives. Professor of the Department of Geological Engineering, Ankara University. Dr. Gürol Seyitoğlu drew attention to the increasing mining activity in Anatolia and emphasized that they should not be found in areas close to fault lines.
‘ALL OUR WATERS WILL BE POISONED IN EASTERN ANATOLIA IF ACTION IS NOT TAKEN FOR CYANIDE POOLS’

Pointing out that the pools created by the companies within the scope of the mining works contain cyanide, Seyitoğlu said, “There is the Kemah-Ilic fault; there’s a pool of cyanide here. Let’s say you mine gold, they function it with cyanide, and they get the gold that way. They also keep that waste pulp in those pools. – In case of an accident, there may be seismic, flood, rainfall; here, when the stream is drained, it goes to the Euphrates Basin. If such an accident happens, you will forget the whole Euphrates Basin in the future. In Eastern Anatolia, all our water – neither irrigation nor drinking water – would be poisoned. Therefore, such structures and engineering structures need to be inspected very well and extra precautions need to be taken. In front of this, I think that another backup measure that will stop this place as soon as it collapses should be considered by our civil engineers. There is also one of the cyanide pools in Eskişehir Kaymaz. Therefore, the stabilization of the cyanide pools here needs to be handled very carefully, if there is a compelling law gap, that gap should be filled. It may cause a major environmental disaster ”.
