4,500 tons of cyanide are used for gold in Turkey every year

Data on the use of cyanide in the Bergama and Kaz Mountains and gold mines, which have entered the country’s agenda, also revealed a fact. According to the Ministry of Energy, 4,500 tons of cyanide are used per year for gold mining in Turkey. The General Directorate of Mines and Petroleum Affairs also announced that there are 9,942 licensed mining enterprises in Turkey and that 3,081 of these enterprises have mined metallic mines such as gold, silver and copper.

In 1996, after Turkey’s first gold mine became operational, thousands of trees were cut down in Izmir Bergama and gold search activities with cyanide began. Bergama villagers; Turkey was the scene of a great struggle, such as not participating in the census, referendum, semi-naked marches, mine site occupation, chaining themselves to the Bosphorus Bridge. Exactly 23 years after the Bergama resistance, a large number of people went to the mine site to stop this slaughter, this time with Canadian company Alamos Gold cutting down thousands of trees in the Kaz Mountains.
