The capacity increase was carried out at Turkey’s second largest cyanide deposit, located in Kapakler village in İliç district of Erzincan. 11,000 tons of cyanide will be used each year in the Kapakler gold mine.

A positive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) decision has been taken by the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning regarding the increase in capacity of Kapakler Gold Mine, including Anagold Madencilik and Çalık Holding are partners. As part of the capacity increase carried out for the second time, the scope of the mine will be expanded and a flotation plant (ore beneficiation) will be set up.

It will operate in an area the size of 2,447 football fields.
According to news from Gökay Başcan from Birgün, the cost of the project, which will become the largest gold mine in the country with the increase in capacity, is 1 million 162 thousand 800 TL. The company, which included the village church of Kapakler within the boundaries of the EIA in its application file, made an amendment. The company’s EIA scope, which will take the church out of the scope of work but operate right next to it, is 1,747 hectares. The company, which has multiplied by 2 and a half its field of activity in 13 years, will work on an area of approximately 2,447 football pitches in total. Near mining settlements, which cover 783.72 hectares of forest and 95.93 hectares of pasture. The mining site is only 250 meters from the villages of Kapakler and Sabırlı. The company, which drowns farmland with a chemical poison, will increase annual sulfuric acid use from 9,000 tonnes to 122,000 tonnes. The use of cyanide will be 11,000 tons per year. Additionally, 16 types of highly hazardous chemicals are used in the mine. Nitric acid, which is used as a cezap among the people, will be used at the rate of 1.50 kilograms per year. According to the information in the EIA file, the company will build 10 evaporators. The chemicals accumulated in the poison pool through these evaporators will be released into the atmosphere by evaporation.

“Only mountain goats can be injured”
Beekeeping and fruit growing have been the region’s most important livelihoods for years. About 130 tons of natural honey were produced in the region in 2019. In fruit growing, which is another source of income, 120 tons of grapes, 600 tons of apples and 234 tons of pears are produced annually. In the EIA report, 19 species of mammals were identified in the field, of which mountain goats could be “damaged” according to international criteria; The other 18 species have been categorized as “low risk”.

Workers claim their rights
The history of the company’s mine, which will increase its capacity, is discussed in terms of workers’ rights and environmental damage. The company, which defends the new capacity increase by arguing that it will create jobs in the region, has repeatedly victimized its workers. In 2019, a worker who spilled sulfuric acid on his feet while working at the mine was fired. Last April, the miners locked themselves on the site against attempts to usurp the salary and leave rights of Çiftay, the domestic subcontractor of the Anagold company. The workers demanded that their wages be increased because of the overtime system, that their leave rights be regulated and that their union rights be recognized.
